Hallmarking is the accurate determination and official recording of the proportionate content of precious metal in precious metal articles. Hallmarks are thus official marks used in India as a guarantee of purity or fineness of precious metal articles
The BIS Hallmark is a hallmarking system for gold as well as silver jewellery sold in India certifying the purity of the metal. It certifies that the piece of jewellery conforms to a set of standards laid by the Bureau of Indian Standards, the national standards organisation of India. India is the second biggest market for gold and its jewellery.
BIS introduced hallmarking for silver jewellery in December 2005 under IS 2112, the standard specification for 'Hallmarking of Silver Jewellery/Artefacts'.
Objectives behind instituting Hallmarking Scheme-
- To protect consumer against victimisation due to irregular silver quality
- Develop India as a leading gold market centre in the World and develop export competitiveness.
- Provide third party assurance and satisfaction that the customer gets the right purity of silver for the given price (value for money).
There are several benefits to purchasing hallmarked jewellery, including:
- Quality assurance: Hallmarks indicate that the piece of jewellery has been independently tested and meets certain standards of purity and quality.
- Authenticity: A hallmark can be used to confirm the identity of the manufacturer or retailer, helping to ensure that the piece is not a counterfeit.
- Investment: Hallmarked gold jewellery has a good resale value and it also serves as a good investment.
- Peace of mind: When you buy hallmarked jewellery, you can be confident that you are getting a quality product that will last for many years.
